The Amen break — four bars of drums by Gregory C. Coleman from the Winstons' 1969 B-side "Amen, Brother", sampled into hip-hop, then sped up and chopped into jungle and drum & bass. This is the main figure (bars 1–2 of the break, which are identical), drums only: the original has no bass under it.
How it sits: the ride keeps straight eighths. Kick on 1 and the and of 1, snare on 2 (backbeat), a ghost snare on the a of 2, a snare on the e of 3, then two kicks on the and and a of 3 before the backbeat on 4 and another ghost on the a of 4. The two-kick pairs and the snare that jumps in early on the e of 3 are what make it swing forward at a straight 136.
Listen for the snare on the e of 3 — it is the hit every chopped version keeps.
Practice: count sixteenths aloud and play only kick and snare first; add the ride once the e of 3 lands cleanly.
