Coco is a dance-song of the Brazilian Northeast (Alagoas, Pernambuco, Paraíba), sung by a coquista and answered by the circle, with the dancers' stamping (trupé) as part of the percussion.
The piano line stands in for the voices: bars 1–2 are the call, a solo phrase built on the 16th–8th–16th síncope, and bars 3–4 are the response, the chorus answering in thirds and closing the loop. Underneath, the ganzá shakes straight sixteenths leaning on the "and", the zabumba hits beat 1, pushes the last sixteenth of beat 1 into beat 2, and the thin bacalhau stick snaps the off-beats, while the palmas and stamping mark both beats.
Listen for how the call ends early in bar 2, leaving space for the chorus, and how the zabumba pickup at the very end pulls the soloist back in.
Practice hint: sing or play only the call and let a friend (or the loop) answer.
