Jersey club — Newark's take on Baltimore club, around 140: claps on 2 and 4 (backbeat), hats on every sixteenth, and one instantly recognisable kick figure, the rhythm the genre's sampled bed squeaks follow.
How it sits: the kick plays the first three quarters straight — 1, 2, 3 — then breaks into two hits a dotted eighth apart, on the a of 3 and the and of 4. Five kicks per bar: steady, steady, steady, then a stumble that pulls you into the next downbeat. The 808 bass doubles the kick from beat 3 so the stumble hits twice as hard; the stuttered piano dyads stand in for the chopped vocal hook.
Listen for the hole on beat 4 itself — the kick skips it and lands half a beat later, and the clap is left alone there.
Practice: say "one, two, three-a, and" while tapping the kick, then add the claps on 2 and 4.
