Maiden Voyage ostinato — the Herbie Hancock vamp: a sus chord struck on beat 1 (dotted quarter) and again on the and of 2, which is then held through the rest of the bar. That early second hit — an anticipation of beat 3 — is the whole figure; it makes a static chord feel like it is leaning forward. The bass doubles the rhythm (root, then fifth on the and of 2) and the kick drum locks with it.
Eighths are straight (no swing). Chords are 7sus4, voiced in fourths over the bass (F–B♭ / D–G–C for C7sus4), moving up a minor third to E♭7sus4, as the tune does; the original is in D, transposed here to C.
Listen for the held note after the and of 2: it should ring, not be clipped. Practice: count "1 – (2) & – 3 – 4" aloud and play only on "1" and "&"; once it is automatic, let the drums' straight-eighth ride float over it.
