Motorik — the krautrock pulse Klaus Dinger played in Neu! (Hallogallo) and that Jaki Liebezeit's Can and early Kraftwerk shared: a beat built to go on forever, like driving down an autobahn. Krautrock critics named it after the German for "motor skills".
How it sits: closed hi-hat on every eighth, snare on 2 and 4, kick on 1, the and-of-2 and 3. Nothing changes from bar to bar — no fills, no crashes — and the bass doubles the hi-hat with straight eighths on one note. Above it a single sustained chord (organ or synth pad on the piano layer) drifts from A to G.
Listen for the hypnosis: after a few loops you stop hearing bars and start hearing a flow. The and-of-2 kick is what keeps it moving forward instead of plodding.
Practice: play along for five full minutes without a single variation; the discipline of not filling is the whole style.
