Afrobeats — the 2010s–20s Nigerian/Ghanaian pop groove (Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy). Not to be confused with Fela's Afrobeat: this is slower, sparser and built for the dance floor, with roots in highlife, dancehall and hip-hop.
How it sits: the kick plays the tresillo (1, the and of 2, 4), a rim/perc voice plays the sixteenth-note 3-3-2 in each half bar, claps land on 2 and 4, and a shaker runs straight sixteenths underneath. The keys answer with short off-beat stabs and the bass leans on the kick, leaving beat 3 open.
Listen for the push-and-pull between the 3-3-2 rim and the straight claps — the groove feels like it is leaning forward while the tempo stays relaxed.
Practice: tap the 3-3-2 with one hand and the claps with the other until the stabs fall into the gaps on their own.
