Amapiano — South African house offshoot from Gauteng townships (mid-2010s on): slow-ish house tempo, jazzy keys and the booming, pitch-bending log drum.

How it sits: everything rides swung sixteenths — the shaker plays all four per beat with the second and fourth pushed late (written at triplet positions). The kick is deliberately sparse (beats 1 and 3), claps sit on 2 and 4, and a rim/woodblock voice ticks on late off-beats. The bass layer is the log drum: short, low, syncopated hits that dodge the kick and slide between chord tones, ending each bar with a quick pickup.

Listen for the space: the kick never fills the bar, so the log drum carries the low end and the groove floats.

Practice: mute everything but shaker and log drum, and count the swung sixteenths aloud (1-e-and-a, with e and a late) until every log hit lands in its slot.
