Alegrías — the bright, major-key cantiña from Cádiz, and the one twelve-count palo that lives in a real major key rather than Phrygian. The compás is the soleá/bulerías wheel: twelve counts with accents on 3, 6, 8, 10 and 12 (3+3+2+2+2 read from 12), here at a lively walking tempo between soleá's weight and bulerías' speed. Written in E major, the traditional key.

How it sits: one bar of 12/8 per compás, counted from 1. The harmony swings between tonic and dominant, a half-compás each: E – B7, then B7 – E. The guitar puts a thumb bass note on 1 and 7, full accented downstrokes on the five accents, muted strokes on 5 and 11 and light upstrokes elsewhere. The palmas (drums layer) clap every count, loud on the accents.

Listen for the hemiola: 3 and 6 are three apart, then 8, 10, 12 are two apart — the bar speeds up in its second half.

Practice: clap all twelve counts but only voice the five accents; then try it starting from 12.
