Bulerías — the fastest flamenco palo, in the twelve-count compás with accents on 12, 3, 6, 8 and 10. Written here as one bar of 12/8 per compás, counted from 1, so the accents fall on pulses 3, 6, 8, 10 and the last pulse (12); flamencos feel the cycle starting on 12, so the pattern begins on an unaccented pulse. The grouping 3+3+2+2+2 opens with the three-three-two cell.
How it sits: the clave layer is the five accents (palmas skeleton). The guitar rasgueo strums every pulse — accented downstrokes on the five, muted strokes on 1, 4 and 7, light upstrokes elsewhere — on Am for the first half and the Phrygian tonic E for the second (por medio). The drums are a cajón (bass tone on 12 and 8, slap on 3, 6 and 10, quiet taps between) plus palmas on every pulse, loud on the accents. The quarter-note tempo 120 is a pulse of 240.
Listen for the long–long–short–short–short shape, and the empty 1 after the big 12.
Practice: clap 12 and 3 only, then add 6, then 8 and 10.
