Mbalax — Senegal's dance-band music (Youssou N'Dour, Étoile de Dakar, Super Étoile): Afro-Cuban-influenced band arrangements driven by the Wolof sabar drum ensemble and the tama talking drum.

How it sits: the sabar roles are mapped onto drum voices — the low thiol on conga-lo, the lead/accompanying sabar strokes on conga-hi (accents on the off-sixteenths), stick slaps on rim, and the tama answering with a quick phrase on tom-hi in bar 2. A light kick marks 1 and 3; the guitar plays a clipped sixteenth ostinato and the bass bounces root–root–fifth under each chord.

Listen for the drums accenting the e and a of the beat while the band keeps the downbeat — the music sounds faster than its tempo.

Practice: loop at 90 with only conga-hi and kick, then add the tama phrase; bring the tempo up only once the off-sixteenth accents stay crisp.
