Baladi (of the country, also masmoudi saghir) is maqsum with its first tek turned into a second dum: dum dum – tek dum – tek –. The two low strokes up front (conga-lo) give it a heavier, earthier stance; the teks (conga-hi) on the and-of-2 and beat 4 are unchanged, with light ka fills (rim) and the riq (hat) on eighths.
It is the rhythm of Egyptian street and folk music and of raqs baladi, the hip-led home-grown style of belly dance. Bass and piano are a drone stand-in in maqam Hijaz on D (D Eb F# G A Bb C), exact in 12-TET.
Listen for the double dum landing like a stamp, then the same lift into beat 3 that maqsum has.
Practice: alternate one bar of maqsum and one of baladi; only the second stroke changes.
