Maqsum is the everyday 4/4 iqa' of Arabic music: dum tek – tek dum – tek –. The dum (low, open centre stroke of the darbuka, conga-lo) falls on 1 and 3; the tek (sharp rim stroke, conga-hi) on the and-of-1, the and-of-2 and beat 4. Light ka strokes (rim) fill the gaps, and the riq (hat) runs eighths, leaning on the teks.

It drives Egyptian pop and sha'abi, Levantine and Gulf song, and much belly-dance music. Bass and piano are a drone-and-ostinato stand-in in maqam Kurd on D (D Eb F G A Bb C), which sits on 12-TET as is.

Listen for the tek on the and-of-2 pulling you into the second dum: that syncopation is what makes maqsum lilt instead of march.

Practice: say dum-tek-ka-tek dum-ka-tek-ka over a quarter-note click, then drop the kas and keep only the skeleton.
