Malfuf (wrapped, also laff) is a fast 2/4 in sixteenths: dum – – tek – – tek –, the bar split 3+3+2 — the same long-long-short as a tresillo, but played on a darbuka. One dum (conga-lo), two teks (conga-hi), light ka strokes (rim) filling the gaps; the riq (hat) doubles the three main strokes.
It is the entrance-and-exit rhythm of belly dance, the zaffa-style flourish that brings a dancer on, and a common fast section in Egyptian and Levantine pieces. Bass and piano follow the 3+3+2 in maqam Nahawand on G (G A Bb C D Eb F#), exact in 12-TET.
Listen for the bar tipping forward: there is only one dum, so the teks feel like they are running toward the next downbeat.
Practice: count 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2 in sixteenths and clap the 1s, then play it over a slow quarter click.
