Çiftetelli (double-stringed; Greek tsifteteli) is a slow eight-beat cycle in eighths: dum – – tek – – tek – | dum – dum – tek – – –. The first half is a 3+3+2 like malfuf; the second half answers with two dums (conga-lo) a quarter apart and a single tek (conga-hi), then space. Light ka strokes (rim) fill. Written here as one 8/4 bar so the whole cycle is one measure.

It is the classic rhythm of Turkish and Greek belly dance and of slow, sensual taksim sections, often with finger cymbals (left out here). Bass and piano are an oud-style ostinato in makam Hicaz on D (D Eb F# G A Bb C), exact in 12-TET.

Listen for the hole after the last tek: the cycle breathes before the next dum.

Practice: count eighths 1 to 16 and say dum on 1, 9 and 11; the teks fall on 4, 7 and 13.
